Ontario, Canada To Sue U.S. Tobacco Companies
The province of Ontario plans to file suit in the United States against US tobacco companies, claiming the companies are involved in a criminal conspiracy.

The suit will seek up to $40 billion in damages.

"Ontario is taking a leadership role as the first Canadian jurisdiction to retain US counsel with the intent to seek damages," said Ontario Health Minister Elizabeth Witmer.

If successful, the damages would be used to cover the cost of treating smoking-related illnesses and for a public education campaign on the dangers of smoking.
