To Whom It May Concern:
We were just made aware by the Society for the Advancement of Women's
Health Research of the tremendous amount of cigarette and tobacco advertising
contained in your magazine. While we have seen this garbage and fully disapproved
of the inclusion of such irresponsible material in this information source,
we, as adults, have just ignored it.
Cosmopolitan is an important information source to both teens
and adults in this country. We are saddened that your editor-in-chief, Kate
White, does not fully appreciate the role that your magazine plays in the
development of a more sophisticated and healthy society.
We are, therefore, canceling our subscription to your magazine and urging
other readers to do the same. By allowing the tobacco industry to advertise
in your magazine you have become a contributing partner to the death and
social destruction that is carried by tobacco-addiction.
Cosmopolitan is a successful and popular magazine. You obviously
could select from many other advertisers. You are, therefore, nothing but
a prostitute company since you are apparently more concerned about making
money than focusing on the health and welfare of our nation's children.
We are not fanatical social do-gooders or zealots, we are just regular
citizens who are working to create a better world for many people -- particularly
this nation's children. We are genuinely saddened that your magazine demonstrates
insufficient social backbone to resist the pressures of big tobacco money.
If we have any money remaining in our account with you, you may keep
it.
Sincerely
back
